What you need to know about ULEZ postcodes
ULEZ postcode checker
Since 2019, the London Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) has made multiple expansions and changes to meet tighter air quality standards. As of August 2023, it covers all of London's 32 boroughs, excluding the M25. Even a short trip within the zone requires a £12.50 daily charge for ULEZ-non compliant vehicles.
The scheme operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, excluding Christmas Day. Since most of London's businesses, parks, residential areas, tourist destinations and venues fall within the ULEZ area, owning a noncompliant vehicle could cost you significantly, even if you don't drive much.
To plan ahead or avoid potential ULEZ charges, you should know whether the postcode you live in or plan to visit is within the ULEZ boundary. With our free ULEZ postcode checker, you can quickly search any London postcode and verify if it's within the zone.
How does the ULEZ postcode checker work?
The ULEZ postcode checker is quite straightforward. All you need to do is enter the postcode or address of the property you want to check. This could be an office building, residential property or even just a landmark you'd like to visit.
Our tool will then search your postcode against all known areas ULEZ affects. Upon searching, it returns the results in seconds.
If you enter a postcode that falls within the current ULEZ boundary, it will pin the exact location on the ULEZ map. That way, you can see how far within the boundary it is and view its location in relation to nearby public transit.
Why should I use a ULEZ postcode checker?
There are no obvious tolls or barriers to tell you when you've entered ULEZ. A camera will scan your number plate and send your daily charge automatically if you drive into the zone with a noncompliant vehicle.
If you are unaware of entering ULEZ and aren't expecting a bill, you may miss the charge. You only have three days to pay before the £12.50 charge becomes a £180 fine (and charges compound daily), so taking a few seconds to check can save you hundreds of pounds.
If you're moving somewhere within or near Greater London, it's also a good idea to know whether ULEZ affects you. You may decide to upgrade to a newer vehicle or choose an area with quicker access to your main destinations.
What areas are in the ULEZ zone?
When the Mayor of London first introduced ULEZ in 2019, it only covered Central London. The area is now over 18 times larger, encompassing roughly 5 million Londoners.
The ULEZ map also includes Heathrow airport (LHR) and City Airport (LCY). This means vehicles entering London's airports must meet the emissions standards or incur a daily charge.
Whether you travel through the zone or partially enter the perimeter, you will incur a charge if your vehicle is not compliant. See below which roads and postcodes are partially within the ULEZ.

What should I do if my postcode is in the ULEZ area?
Just because you live within the ULEZ zone doesn't mean you have to do anything. TfL estimates that in the whole of Greater London, 90.5% of vehicles are already ULEZ-compliant.
If you drive a diesel car older than September 2015 or a petrol car older than January 2006, however, there's a good change ULEZ affects you (though there are exceptions to this rule of thumb). If your postcode is partially or fully within the ULEZ zone and you drive a non-compliant vehicle, you must take action.
The best option is to upgrade your vehicle to one with the required emissions standard. This doesn't necessarily mean you need a brand new car. Almost all modern used vehicles meet the standard, and plenty of older models do as well. Even though this may seem expensive at first, keep in mind you will save money over time on ULEZ charges, convenience and fuel efficiency.
London is also very well-connected through the tube, trains and busses. If your trip is a one-off, you could drive to a location outside ULEZ, park there and take public transport.
If you are living or moving within the ULEZ zone, you will only be charged when you drive (not when your vehicle remains parked). To avoid frequent charges, you could switch to a greener form of transport, like a bike or public transport some or all of the time.
Common questions about ULEZ postcodes
If your postcode is within ULEZ, only have to pay the £12.50 daily charge for the days you drive. And you only have to pay if your car doesn't meet ULEZ emissions standards, which 90.5% of vehicles in London already do.
If you don't comply with ULEZ, the only exception to this rule is if your postcode falls partially inside and partially outside the boundary. In that case, you will not be charged for driving through the sections outside.
